According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress is now classified as a health epidemic of the 21st century. It just really seems unavoidable and statistics would show that at least one-third of the world's population is dealing with stress.

Common Causes of Stress

There are many reasons why a person would feel stressed out. Some stressors may seem too simple for others, while some are just really complex. Common stressors that a person may encounter throughout their lives are the following:

  • Important life events like weddings, birthday parties, and anniversaries
  • School or work
  • Family problems
  • Injuries or chronic illnesses
  • Death of a loved one

These are just a few causes of stress and what you should really know is that each person handles these things differently. And so, some of these may not seem to be stressful for you, but it could be for others.

Common Signs of Stress

Now, how do you know if you’re already very stressed out? When your stress level is already overboard, this could already affect your body. Some of the common signs or symptoms that you should be on the lookout for are:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Weak immune system
  • Chest pains
  • Nausea

Ways to Relieve Stress

While these are symptoms that can be easily remedied by over-the-counter medicines, if your stressor isn’t taken care of, you’ll most likely experience the same symptoms again and again.

If you’re someone who doesn’t want to rely on medicines when it comes to dealing with stress, there are still simple and easy things that you can do to make yourself feel more relaxed or better. Here are some of them:

1. Choose Your Battles

What you should learn is the skill of determining the things that are making you stressed out. List them down and if you end up with quite a long list, learn to choose what you should handle and let go of. This will help you have more time for yourself rather than spending time dealing with so many things at a single time.

2. Get Enough Sleep

Make sure that you get at least 8 hours of sleep daily. Lack of sleep will make your body have a hard time dealing with stress and you’ll most likely end up sick because of this. If your schedule does not allow you to have this much sleep, make sure you squeeze in a few naps of at least 30 minutes during the day.

3. Exercise

Endorphins are what your body produces when you involve yourself in physical activities. These are the chemicals in your brain that could help make you feel relaxed and improve your overall wellness. Exercising could also help you sleep better at night.

4. Talk to a Friend

Surround yourself with people who are supportive of you. When you’re stressed, it’s possible that you’re not seeing things clearly. It’s important that you talk to a friend or even a professional about what’s stressing you out before you make any life-altering decisions.

5. Leave for a While

When you just really think that you can no longer tolerate all the stress, then leave for a while. Take that vacation you’ve always been dreaming about. Just make sure that you pamper yourself during the time you’re away so that you’ll come back with a better outlook in life. You may be more productive because of this.
