Do you find yourself not accomplishing tasks on time? You might be dealing with work overload. Read on to find out solutions to beat it.

What is Work Overload?

Have you experienced doing all your tasks but it seems that the workdays are short? You might be experiencing work overload. It happens when the amount of work exceeds a person's capability of doing a task in a given time.

As we try to finish our work but continually lack time, we are forced to extend our time in the office. What's worse, not only do we get stressed and feel ill, but we also compromise the quality of our work. It's terrible both for you and the company. Hence, you need to take the necessary steps to avoid it.

How to Avoid Work Overload

First, you must evaluate the real cause of work overload. While it is often due to a higher workload than usual, sometimes it is caused by other factors such as accepting more work, poor time management, making mistakes, or an organizational problem. If you find out that you are not causing it, here are some tips to overcome it:

1. Set Workload Limits

While this may seem an obvious thing to do, some people accept more work beyond their capacity. To arrange a workload limit, list down all your tasks for the day and estimate a realistic time frame for each. Learn to say no when you can't do something anymore and present your reason(s) politely.

2. Prioritize Tasks

List all your tasks, then organize them according to priority. The first on your list should be important and urgent ones. You can number them or assign letters such as "A" as "very important," "B" as "important," and "C" as "not important."

3. Talk to your Teammates

In case you are working with a team and you think that they have not noticed the situation, inform them immediately. Each member must know that they all should be doing the urgent tasks properly. They must leave secondary tasks temporarily and focus on the important ones. If a colleague is not skilled enough to do it, assign it to others. Those who are done must help their colleagues.

4. Delegate Tasks

It is possible that you are not delegating your tasks to other team members. Remember that some tasks require others' help, so do not hesitate to distribute them efficiently.

5. Control your Emotions

With stress and pressure, some people cannot help but feel anxious, angry, or even think negatively. Being emotional causes delay, mistakes, and problems in finishing a task. Hence, you should control your emotions before they overpower you. Find effective ways to relax and destress such as breathing techniques, meditation, taking a break, or getting enough sleep.

6. Inform the Management

If you've done everything and realize that the cause of work overload is not by yourself, the team, or the organization, but due to lack of workforce, talk to your manager and make them understand the need for additional help. Hiring temporary or permanent qualified worker(s) can be a great solution to the problem.

To conclude, remember that workload is detrimental to your overall health. Thus, you should not ignore this. Follow these tips, and you might discover the hidden cause and the best solution.
