How to Curb Your Cravings
Cravings are the body's worst opponent against eating healthy. No matter how healthy your food is, too much of anything will negatively affect you. In this article, we tackle how to fight off those cravings.
One of your worst opponents in the fight for a fit body is the insatiable craving for eating. It’s very difficult to suddenly adjust your eating habits for a new, healthy you. If you're not careful, you can end up with unconsciously going to the fridge late at night and emptying its contents. Today, we’ll be looking at some tips and tricks to curb those hunger pangs. In the end of this article, the only thing you'll binge on is Netflix.
Remember, these are only some of the ways you can curb those cravings. The most important part of curbing your cravings is that it’s a lifestyle choice. You are doing this as a long-term goal, not just to satisfy your resolutions. Keep all of these tips in mind the next time you feel tempted to eat an extra snack.
1. Go Cold Turkey
Stop eating. I know it’s not that easy, but the first step is always stopping yourself from eating just one meal that you know is too much for you. Once in a while, eat something small, like a donut. Not a box of donuts, just a donut. It’s better than binging a lot more later.
2. Be More Active
It doesn’t matter what physical activity you do, what matters is that you do it. Instead of taking elevator or escalator, take the stairs. If you have any sports, put your energy into that. In the mornings, have a short 10-minute workout consisting of jumping jacks and push-ups.
3. Drink More Liquids
Water is an obvious choice. Drink water at least once an hour. No sodas or other carbonated drinks because you need to curb your sugar levels. If you must, you can drink some coffee or tea that is 10% sweetened with a bit of honey or butter.
4. Try Healthier Treats
Find your healthy treat in oatmeal cookies or those "trail mix" types of food. Those treats are loaded with nutrients and carbs. Without all the sugar and cholesterol that come with most other snacks, you can fight your hunger without chasing that sugar high. You should search for the many treats you can make right at home. Making food by yourself is also good for fighting off your junk food cravings.
5. Find a Hobby
Distractions are your best friend. Most people eat food because they are bored. Ergo, if you aren’t bored, you won’t eat. The more fun the hobby is, the better. Take up crafts such as origami or start reading more books that you haven’t gotten around to. You’ll find that in time, it’s much more satisfying than eating for the 7th time in a day.
6. Focus on Your Goals
Why are you reading this article? It’s because you want to curb your cravings. Focus on that want. Think about why you’re doing what you’re doing. Remember that not eating whenever you want isn’t just torturing yourself. This is to be a better and healthier person than you were yesterday.
It’s important to note that you won’t see instant results. It could take days, weeks, or months before you get used to not eating at your leisure. Those days, weeks, and months will be difficult. However, take comfort in the fact that eventually, it will be worth it. There will come a day that when you see a bag of chips, you won't be tempted to grab it and just walk past it.
