Let's Get Physical | Ways to Move More Without Exercising

Published on: 30/06/2020

Are you too busy to exercise? Do you have no access to the gym? Try these simple activities to sneak in a workout without realizing it.

Without a doubt, exercise is hugely beneficial to our bodies. It helps improve one's mood, control weight, promotes sleep, and many more. Furthermore, it is recommended that adults have at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week (about 20 minutes each day) and strength training to get the major muscle groups working two days a week.

However, busyness gets in the way to achieve this. Moreover, the idea of exercising seems exhausting and uninviting for most adults who would prefer lazying on the couch after office hours or even on weekends.

The good news is there are many ways to incorporate working out even in the everyday routine - without feeling like you're exercising! We gathered the things you can do to ensure getting physical activities without exerting so much effort.

1. Stretch in the morning

Gentle stretching after waking up is one of the easiest ways you can do in the morning. Plus, it won't take so much of your time. You can also follow an easy basic yoga routine.

2. Take the longer route

Ditch the usual driving or commuting if you can walk or bike. Instead of elevators, use the stairs. When parking your car, find a farther place so you can walk. All of these little swaps are a win-win situation and add up for an intense workout activity. Another bonus: You are taking the scenic route!

3. Walk as much as possible

The most obvious thing is to walk whenever you can. Whether you're at home, exploring your area, strolling in a mall, having meetings, or even talking over the phone, walking goes a long way. What's more, this little movement can prevent you from living a sedentary lifestyle.

4. Stand up and move from time to time

Sitting for a long time has many adverse health effects. A study in 2017 said that there's a significant correlation between a sedentary lifestyle and early death risk. What's worse, the damage is irreversible. Hence, find ways to move more throughout the day. This is highly recommended, especially if your work requires much desk work. Another tip: Put your drinks or snacks away from your table so you'll be forced to stand up to reach them.

5. Have fun while cleaning the house

Whoever said cleaning is just a chore? Make it productive by sneaking in body movements like jumping, dancing, stretching; you name it! Move enthusiastically through your house as you sweep, vacuum, wipe, dust, and scrub. Additionally, wash your car by yourself instead of having a carwash service.

6. Make waiting time a productive time

Whether you're waiting in a long line, stuck in traffic, or doing nothing at all, do some stretching, leg raise, neck rolling, or even moving your fingers.

7. Play sports or do outdoor activities

Any sporting activity can make you burn calories and sweat your body. Invite friends or co-workers to be more active and play tennis, badminton, basketball, or frisbee. You can also join or organize a sports club.

8. Take your dog outside

If you have a furry friend, take them out and let them have some cardio. Walking your dog is another simple trick that can push you to go outside and move your legs.
