Did you know that...
Cheese, as we know it today, was accidentally discovered over 8,000 years ago when milk separated into curds and whey?
There is a bank in Italy that accepts Parmesan cheese as collateral?
Currently there are about 2,000 types of cheese around the world?
The most popular cheese dish in the US is mac & cheese?

Cheese is a kind of dairy product that is known to be high in saturated fat - the fat that causes blockage in the arteries. It is also a calorie-dense product thus considered as a big NO-NO for dieters and weight conscious people. But did you know that aside from these facts, there are actual benefits that we can derive from having a bite of cheese as part of our daily diet? Listed below are the health benefits of cheese:

1. A good source of nutrients for stronger bones and teeth

Due to its high levels of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and casein - cheese as a by-product of milk is considered as good source of these nutrients which can aid in making our bones stronger when combined with proper weight exercise. Our teeth is prevented from having dental cavities because of the protein casein which is found in cheese (same with milk) and it provides wax-like covering for our teeth especially after a high-sugar intake.

2. It provides heart and gut health benefits

Some types of cheese like cheddar, mozzarella and gouda, contain probiotics.  Probiotics are live microorganisms that have health benefits when consumed. They provide all sorts of powerful benefits for the body and brain.

The right amount of good bacteria or probiotics in the intestines have been proven to provide numerous benefits. It is also great way to prevent inflammatory hormones from being secreted into the system. Likewise, in assisting the efficient absorption of nutrients in the intestines.

3. Ideal source of protein for weight management

Being a high-caloric food item, cheese of any kind is often left out in meal planning especially for weight reduction. But did you know that including 2-3 servings of cheese (or any dairy product, in this case) can help in reducing weight? One serving is approximately 30-40 grams and it could be a filling snack or just part of your breakfast. Make sure to remember that cheese as topping for your pizza or part of your cheesecake does not count. Since these types of foods are loaded with nutrients such as fat and carbohydrates, it can contribute to unnecessary weight gain.

4. Helps prevent Type II Diabetes

It may sound ridiculous but yes, including cheese as part of your daily diet can actually reduce your risk of having diabetes. Largely due to calcium and whey content of this dairy product. Calcium has been shown to help increase insulin secretions and whey which is a protein found in dairy products have also been found to aid in increased insulin sensitivity.

These benefits however, do not guarantee that the more cheese we eat, the better benefits we can get. According to one study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, consumption of 20 grams cheese (especially the hard type of cheese) daily is enough to aid in fending off diabetes. However, higher cheese consumption does not equate to higher chances of getting rid of diseases.

Many factors such as right quality and quantity of foods and physical activity, play their respective roles in achieving good health. It is only good to know that cheese - being so yummy can also be so healthy!
