Tooth Brushing | A Healthy Habit

Keep a healthy habit of proper tooth brushing and oral care through these following tips.

Having healthy gums and teeth is vital in our overall health. The healthier our mouth is, the lesser the risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Therefore, it is crucial to do whatever we can to ensure that they remain in excellent condition.

Furthermore, brushing your teeth and caring for your gums seems like a no-brainer task. All of us know that brushing, flossing, and using a mouthwash are the foundations of a healthy oral care routine. However, they are not the only ways to maintain that sparkly smile. Keeping it as a habit is another thing, especially to kids and young adults. Read the following tips to maintain proper oral care routine:

1. Brush every after meal.

After each meal, brush teeth for two minutes using a soft-bristled brush — this aids in removing the food and plaque left between your teeth and gums. Moreover, don't forget to scrub your tongue since it's a place for bacteria build-up, too.  Your toothbrush should fit in your mouth comfortably to reach all areas.

Also, consider using an electric toothbrush. It is a more effective way to help reduce gingivitis and plaque than the usual method of brushing.

2. Replace your toothbrush every three months.

Change your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are already worn-out. A frayed toothbrush will not thoroughly clean your teeth. If used in such a condition, it will cause bacteria build-up to your mouth.

3. Floss at least once a day.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), this helps remove the plaque and food that your toothbrush cannot reach. It doesn't matter whether you do it in the morning, after lunch or before you sleep at night. The important thing is, you do it! Besides, studies show that plaque will resurface on even clean teeth in three to four hours after brushing.

4. Use a toothpaste with fluoride.

Opt for a toothpaste of any brand that claims to freshen breath, reduce plaque, and whiten teeth. Whatever color and flavor you choose, as long it has fluoride, then you are good.

5. Visit your dentist regularly and have dental cleanings.

By doing this, your dentist can detect early signs and symptoms of gum if you see them routinely. In that way, if you show symptoms, they can be treated before they get worse and become complicated. A professional cleaning every six months is the only solution to remove tartar. It can also eliminate any plaque you missed when brushing and flossing. In case you have gingivitis, regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings can help cure it.

6. Use a mouthwash

Just like flossing and brushing, using a therapeutic mouthwash helps prevent bad breath and tooth decay, reduce plaque, prevent gingivitis, slows down the development of tartar, says the American Dental Association (ADA). Additionally, it can get rid of the food particles or debris left on your mouth, although this does not mean it's a substitute for brushing or flossing. To do it, swish it for 30 to 60 seconds then spit it out. Note: Children below six years should not use a mouthwash unless recommended by a dentist.
